Becoming Minimal
May 15, 2018I'm Adelynn. I am a twenty-something trying to navigate work, family, college, and relationships. I've been in college for three years so far, and during that time I've had to move many many times. I moved from my parents to my first apartment. Then from there to Yellowstone National Park where I lived for three months. Every semester living in a different apartment and every Summer a different state. After about a year and a half of moving everything I own, I grew tired of all the junk that I had accumulated over my short life. I decided something needed to change.
During the time I was thinking about how to change my lifestyle I heard about this movement. The "minimalist" movement. I watched endless Youtube videos and they inspired me not only to get rid of my junk but also to get rid of my bad habits.
My first year of college was filled with shopping at Goodwill, and while there isn't anything wrong with that, I bought too much junk and most of the time it was stuff I didn't need. Something had to change.
So I decided to sit down and go through all my things, clothes, books, movies, wires...everything. I ended up with countless garbage bags full of things that were filling up my closet and life. I ended up with way less than I began with, but it still wasn't on par with all those Youtubers and their one-chair-living rooms. I was mad at myself that I couldn't be as "hardcore" as them. After much thought, I realized that minimalism isn't a bar to be reached. Minimalism is a lifestyle. Minimalism is a pact you make with yourself. Minimalism is forming new habits and new ways of thinking. When I reached this point is when I began to flourish as a minimalist.
Everyone's journey will look different, everyone's goals will not be the same and that's the beauty. I decided to start this blog to share my journey. I wanted to inspire others to start their own journey, no matter what that looks like. Anyone can take a small step today and ask yourself, "does this object/task/thing add value to my life?"
Do you consider yourself a minimalist? How did your journey begin? I'd love to hear about it! Leave a comment below telling me about you!
