About two years ago, I learned about the newest craze that was quickly taking YouTube, blogs, and the internet by storm--menstrual cups. At first, I was completely weirded out, but yet, at the same time oddly curious. After days of research, I decided to bite the bullet and spend $30 on Amazon for my first menstrual cup.
The first couple of times trying to use it was a struggle to say the least. It was uncomfortable, and I was afraid that it would get stuck up there forever! But after watching a few hundred YouTube videos of seasoned veterans explaining better methods of placement and removal--I became a pro after about three cycles. As a vet myself now, I can honestly say that switching to a menstrual cup changed my life, and these are the reasons why...
1.Better for The Active Human
I am super active. I hike, work-out, kayak, and for two summers, I have been a ropes course and rock-wall instructor. Because of this, being on my period was always a struggle. Since buying my menstrual cup, all of that has changed. I usually forget that I'm even on my period. And because I can leave the cup in for 12 hours--I don't have to worry about changing a tampon or pad while I'm in the middle of an adventure in the wilderness.
2. Better on The Bank Account
Every month millions of women spend countless dollars on feminine hygiene products. A box of pads or tampons cost anywhere from $7-$12 depending on where you live. Over time that adds up and because a menstrual cup can last 5-10 years-- the amount of money you have the potential to save is huge!
3. Better for The Earth
While most tampons take about six months to decompose—pads can take anywhere from 500 to 800 years to break down! As landfills are at an all-time high--there is no better reason to be a better steward of the earth and make a switch to a menstrual cup.
4. Better for You
The FDA doesn't regulate the chemicals that are in tampons, liners, or pads. Those chemicals are absorbed into your body and can cause bad cramps—not to mention Toxic Shock Syndrome. Yikes! Menstrual cups are made of medical grade silicone that can be sterilized before and after every cycle so there is no fear of TSS or nasty unregulated chemicals entering into your body.
I hope these reasons might cause you to consider making the switch to a menstrual cup. I'm so glad I did.
